13 August 2014
On Wednesday, 13 August, we received an introduction to the course including how the course was structured, the syllabus, and how we would be graded. We began to create our webpage at weebly.com, and chose a theme for the webpage. We stopped before creating a domain name for the webpage.
14 August 2014
On Thursday, 14 August, we talked about webpage building including the creation of the website, adding pages to the website and naming the pages to put various projects in. We then went back and added a title to every page and added text and a title to the main body of the page. We subsequently uploaded a picture of Frank Stella to the "First Nine Weeks Project" link.
15 August 2014
On Friday, 15 August, we were given an introduction to all the tools available on Adobe Photoshop and reviewed the process of screen-casting. We additionally looked at several webpage./s of previous students in this class.
18 August 2014
On Monday, 18 August, we began working with Photoshop. We learned about adding new layers, changing the background color and then using Cntrl + Bkspace to change the color of the background to the color selected. We also learned how to use the rectangular marquee tool to create rectangles of various sizes, and how to hide and delete certain layers that were unnecessary. We used this knowledge to create art based on Joseph Albers' Homage to Squares, and created four images: one that was a monochromatic design, one using complementary colors, one using analogous colors, and one using tertiary colors.
19 August 2014
On Tuesday, 19 August, we began to work on pieces based on the works of Frank Stella. We learned how to show the grid so that squares were mathematically similar to the original square and were positioned in the middle of the square. We also learned how to use the paint bucket tool (in lieu of Cntrl + Bkspace) and how to use the eyedropper tool to easily select the same color out of billions of colors.
20 August 2014
On Wednesday, 20 August, we learned how to "unshow" the grid by going to View --> Show --> Grid. We also learned how to create a brush using our signature by taking a picture of the signature and then using the magic eraser tool, the eraser, and the pen to edit the signature. Then, going to Edit and Brush preset, we can create a signature. Later we also used the elliptical tool and the smudge tool.
21 August 2014
On Thursday, 21 August, we used the text box tool to type Bling and learned how to manipulate it in various ways. We used the transform tool to change the text box, and then we went to Layer Styles to change various effects including Bevel and Emboss, Stroke, Inner Glow, Gradient Overlay, and Pattern Overlay. We then used the brush tool to add bling to Bling by using the star brush.
22 August 2014
On Friday, 22 August, we saved a picture and opened it in Photoshop. We wrote a word in a text box and explored how to change the font and size of the words. We used the wind filter (Filter -> Stylize -> Wind) to change the wind on the picture. We transformed it using the perspective tool, rotating it clockwise and counter clockwise. We then used the blur tool and used the eraser to change the opacity.
25 August 2014
On Monday, 25 August, we used the text tool to write the word Fire. We used the smudge tool to make the impression of the flame by changing the strength of the streak of the smudge (or the opacity) and then used the magic selection tool (to select a particular object in the confines of a closed shape) and used the gradient tool to create a gradient that resembled fire. We mistakenly used the hue and saturation tool instead of the color balance tool to make the flame actually look realistic.
26 August 2014
On Tuesday, 26 August, we used the rectangular marquee tool to create a 2-inch white rectangle, used Cntrl + J to create several new layers, and then used the smudge tool to create flames. Then, we used the color balance tool to create the color of flame, and then used the Timeline tool (under Windows) to create a sequence of frames that were the different layers b y hiding and un-hiding layers. We then changed the frame skip rate to 0.1 so that the frames moved continuously and looped the frames. We then used the tween tool to insert layers between each frame to make the transition smoother. To save it as a GIF, go under File and Save for Web.
27 August 2014
Catch-Up Day
28 August 2014
On Thursday, 28 August, we used the text tool to write Grass. We then used the Filter Gallery tool and Reticulate tool to create a grass-like effect, and used various layer styles to make it look more grass-like.
29 August 2014
On Friday, 29 August, we found a picture of Earth and changed the image size by going to Image --> Image size and changed the size of the picture. We created a new layer and used the elliptical tool to created an ellipse. By right clicking the image, we made the ellipse into a work path, and could have changed the tolerance. We took the text tool and typed text onto the outside of the work path and then manipulated the text using the character palette. We rotated the ellipse, made it larger and made it look like the rings of Saturn, and then rasterized and erased the overlapping part of the text.
2 September 2014
On Tuesday, 2 September, we typed Keystone on a Text Box and then used the Warp Tool to warp the text using the Arc tool. Then we created a workpath on the text and used the brush tool to make a stitch brush. We went to the pen tool and then used the right click to go to stroke path and used the stitch on the stroke path.
3 September 2014
On Wednesday, 3 September, we typed another word into a text box and then used the Warp Tool to warp the text again. We then created a new workpath and stroked it, and then went to delete the workpath. We talked about a contour drawing and made a brush using the contour drawing and then used the brush palette to change/edit the brush where it can be manipulated in man ways.
4 September 2014
On Thursday, 4 September, we took a picture and used the pen tool to select an area. We then made a selection and then created a brush with the selection. We then created a terracotta army.
5 September 2014
Catch-Up Day 2
6 - 14 September 2014
OPI Trip
15 September
On Monday, 15 September, we created a clipping mask. A text layer was put under an image and on the top right of the layer thing on the right was clicked creating a drop down menu in which clipping mask was created. The image underneath an image, when a clipping mask is made, will be the shape. The image on top will be the pattern over the shape.

25 September 2014
On Thursday, 25 September, we learned about the lasso tool instead of the pen tool to select an area, as well as the magnetic tool to select an area with similar colors. We also learned about adjusting an image by going to Image --> Adjustments --> Desaturate (to remove color) and Black and White. We also were able to edit the image by going to Brightness, Contrast, Levels, and Curves. To start the piece, we selected an area of the picture based on shadows, midtones, and highlights by going to Select --> Color Range, and then changing to select shadows, midtones, and highlights. We used Cntrl + J on each color range, and then went to Edit --> Fill --> any color, and then went to preserve transparency.
26 September 2014
On Friday, 26 September, we took a "yearbook" style picture and used the pen tool to go select our face. We made the selection and learned how to use the feather radius to soften the edges. (We had a reminder about editing the image). With the selection, we selected the shadows and copied it onto a new layer. We were able to edit the image by cleaning it up using the eraser tool, the pen tool, and then putting the shadow layer in front to emulate an artist's work.
29 September 2014
Posterization- Absent: Today posterization was used. First the image was desaturized. The image was then posterized, (Image/Adjustments/Posterize). The number was first set to 2 but then was messed around with. The more numbers there were the more colors could be added. Colors were selected as before, Select/Color Range. Layers were duplicated and copied as before. ~ Daniel
30 September 2014
Threshold/Cutout- Absent: Today filter galleries were used. It can be accessed through Filter/Filter Gallery. Cutout was used and the different options were messed around with to get the desired options. It can mess with the edges, deciding to blur them or have the more smooth, etc. Also threshold could be used to simultaneously make it black and white while simultaneously messing with the levels. ~Daniel
1 October 2014
On Wednesday, 1 October, we took a picture of ourselves "flexing" our muscles, and therefore proceeded to go to Filter --> Liquify Tool where we could choose to pucker, bloat, twist, etc. any part of our image. For example, the bloat tool could be used on the muscles to increase their size and the pucker tool could accomplish the opposite. We could additionally alter the brush size and the pressure to change what we did to the image.
2 October 2014
On Thursday, 2 October, we talked about the creation of our Vector Portraits and Lichtenstein comics in Photoshop. We learned that by using the pen tool, we could use edit fill or the paint bucket tool to accomplish a Vector Portrait look. The rest of the period was spent making our websites up to date and catching up on missed work as well as working on the Vector Portrait.
3 - 10 October 2014
Between Friday, 3 October and Friday, 10 October, we had another Catch-Up week to work on our Vector Portraits and other make up work as well as working on our Nine Week Projects.
OMG THO, 3RD NINE WEEKS (aka FREEDOM FROM BOREDOM)
5 January 2015
On 5 January 2015, we were reintroduced to the course material that we would be working on as well as the Autodesk 3D suite where we could download picture editing software. We then began to work on our first project, the Tiny Planets, where a picture of a skyline would be chosen, flipped upside down (Edit -> Transform -> Flip Vertical), and then would be filtered using Polar Coordinates (Filters -> Pixelate -> Polar Coordinates). While most people got rid of the line that occurred when the picture was filtered with the smudge tool, I was able to choose the side that looked better in the image, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select that half of the image, and then Cntrl + J it into a new layer. I would then produce a mirror image of that half of the filtered image (Edit -> Transform -> Flip Horizontal) and then move that part of the image to the side I did not want, creating a symmetrical planet.
6 January 2015
On 6 January 2015, we continued to work on our Tiny Planets. Because, planets are truly tiny.
7 January 2015
On 7 January 2015, we attempted to simulate the "Sunday Funny" Comic Strips to imitate the style of Roy Lichsteiner. By going to Filter -> Pixelate -> Color Halftone, we were able to create circles that had each of the three primary colors in it, creating a sort of half-tone image. Thence, we commenced working on a vector portrait that we would apply the Color Halftone filter to later in the week.
8 January 2015
On 8 January 2015, we continued to work on our vector portraits in preparation to convert the vector portraits into something resembling Roy Lichsteiner's Comic Strips by using the Color Halftone filter.
9 January 2015
On 9 January, we went to the webpages of all of the Computer Design students from the second quarter and looked at their work.
12 January 2015
On 12 January, we took our vector portraits and applied two filters to recreate the effect of Roy Lichsteiner's Comic Strips. One way was by going to Filter -> Pixelate -> Color Halftone where we were then able to choose the radius necessary to create a dot-like effect. The other way was by going to Filter -> Filter Gallery -> Sketch -> Halftone Pattern, which would create a very similar effect.
13 January - 15 January 2015
We continued working on our Roy Lichsteiner vector portraits.
16 January 2015
Alumni Day: No class :(
20 January 2015 - 23 January
On 20 January, we looked at the work of Shepard Fairey, and tried to duplicate both his Obama Hope Poster Style as well as his Japanese background. Using the Posterization techniques we learned during the first semester, we were able to duplicate his Obama Hope Poster; using a lot of ingenuity, I was able to come up with something similar to the Japanese background. Using the Illuminati. #itanimulliconfirmedlolggnoreezlikecalfreezy
Time between 23 January and 28 January
So we made our drink bottle / can thing labels. Quite fun doing that. My drink is very healthy, tbh. Well, Photoshop was being a nice person and decided to not allow me to save stuff, but I still have the can label and the can in 3-D, and they look pretty rad. I might upload it sometime... hopefully I remember to... if not, my teacher saw its fabulousness (hopefully) and remembered how nutritious my drink was.
28 - 30 January 2015
On 28 January, we saw a 3-D Type Tutorial in Photoshop from <http://www.lynda.com/Photoshop-tutorials/Creating-3D-Type-Photoshop/173883-2.html>.
After typing in some text, the text was altered to be a thick font, to fit the screen, and the color changed to a lighter grey. Then, by going to 3-D -> New 3-D Extrusion from Selected Layer, we were able to alter the text in three dimensions on a "mesh surface". By going to the 3-D palette, we were able to move the scene and rotate, etc. The coordinates of the figure will be on the Properties panel, where it will also give the option to "move to ground". Additionally, we were able to distort the text using the Properties panel and play with the settings. Hovering over the portion of text and pressing "v" is a shortcut to distortion. It was very fun. Because looking at things in 3-D gives you a new scope on the world.
Just... Klein bottles tho... I spend like an eternity banging my head on my desk when I tried to make that it 3-D Photoshop... It didn't work so well
Oh, and just go to that tutorial; see the link above. So much went down those few days, as well as Photoshop being an ornery little child... I seem to be raging at Photoshop a lot... but... the lag is real. And so is the glitchiness. #ripmysanity #salty #ggnoreezlikecalfreezyPhotoshop

2 - 5 February 2015
Working and experimenting with 3-D objects. Because that's always fun :)
Well, actually, for you (me), not really objects, but just experimenting, and doing stuff... Yeah. GG
I actually managed to accomplish something - I figured out how to use depth maps. Yay... So happy xD
Oh, and guess what, gradients are so cool... with depth maps
I probably at this point started like 500 projects I never finished, but just random little experiments of mine turned out well, I suppose

9 - 10 February 2015
Working on scene, manipulating 3-D objects: there's so much stuff in 3-D. OMG THO
Working on the scene was actually cool, but Photoshop kept crashing. So I moved computers... twice... because, Photoshop just hurts my brain when it says that it has no RAM. Well, gg to you Photoshop. You win this one. But we stand strong. Sorta. I mean, I could just fall over if someone like Photoshop blew on my face, but... #ggnoreezlikecalfreezyPhotoshop
And btw... Don't render stuff... Photoshop will blow your mind up... and itself up... #ggnoreezlikecalfreezyPhotoshop

Scene - Layer for 3-D objects; every layer is a separate scene
Mesh - wire frame structure of 3-D object
Material- Skin of Mesh (i.e, shininess, diffuse map)
Camera - view, 2-D snapshot of 3-D object
Light - reveals attributes of materials, casts shadows
We watched another video of a 3-D tutorial; this guy was pretty chill and stuff, but we were doing something pretty simple with spheres and rings like Saturn, so... Oh, did I forget to mention Photoshop crashed... again? Well, #ggnoreezlikecalfreezyPhotoshop #ripmysanity #salt

12 - 13; 16 - 18 February 2015
So stuff went DOWN
We worked with like cones and donuts and the like because some people discovered that there were meshes you could use that were pre-programmed into Photoshop. Well, #ggnoreezlikefreezy peoplez. And we worked with a starfield and replicating the affects of moving through a starfield by creating a bunch of layers of stars and making postcards with those, which then would be traveled through. BUT, Photoshop died... again... #ripPhotoshop... we never actually finished the stuff, but we would come back to it on the last day of class

Star Wars text is bae. We worked on that for the entire period by going to a tutorial page that told us how to do it in 2 - D (ez btw), and the banter was so OP. My theme for Star Wars was complimenting Sam's various brilliances... as was @sempai 's because there is just enough of that brilliance to go around. Photoshop didn't die today... but that's because I moved locations again... #ggnoreezlikefreezy. Oh, and I figured out at the end of the period that we were supposed to use 3-D to animate the text. GG me.
20 February - 6 March 2015
Well, for one, I decided to change my background. And no, I didn't make that.... I'm not that good. Or good in general. BUT, moving on... we worked on our 3rd Nine Week Projects and Portfolio's the last few weeks of class. And I had a lot of fun doing that, and the banter that came along with it. I tried to focus on what I experimented with the most - not 3-D objects, but cooler depth maps that would give unpredictable results... And choosing space as a theme was not exactly the best idea I've had... I should've chosen landscapes, cuz depth mapping stuff usually ends up with cool landscapes. But I didn't. I had a lot of fun working on stuff, even if my projects didn't really reflect on space more than just making stuff with space. And while working on my projects, I listened to the Interstellar theme on a loop... and the 300 violin orchestra (totally not advertising here).
